Phew! I made some seriously badass progress on story and character development today. More on that later. For now, let’s take a look back at some more old artwork from Merry Melony Episode 2 (animated). The story is being very nearly completely rewritten. A lot of the same atmosphere, themes and environments remain, but the character arcs and actual plot is very different. The male character pictured above is almost surely not going to exist any longer. The younger sister however has become a very important part of the story and we’ll be seeing more of her. I will be redesigning her and giving her the full visual development treatment I gave Melony in the coming weeks.

Stay tuned! I have more old images to post and more old animations, too! Reblog this and please tell any of your friends who might be interested about this blog. Lastly I am always open to feedback and will try to answer any questions. Thanks guys!

I can’t wait to see where this goes!

Everyone should really follow Eric Drobile’s development blog for his upcoming interactive motion comic reboot of his head-world Merry Melony. The concept art so far is fantastic and the art from the original execution is just as so. Please reblog this to everyone who’s interested in comics and animation, ‘cause he really deserves the support, especially for when this project finally goes into production!

Kawaii Dog-Thing from John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982) for Neekko
SPOILER :BHere’s a link to the scene with the dogs. I feel like the moment when the dogs face opens up doesn’t get enough attention (it’s the first disturbing moment in the movie!) The first time I saw that I just about shit! I wasn’t prepared, lol. This might seem “too easy” for kawaii-ing something up - I originally wanted to do Norris-Head-Thing, but I dunno. The Dog Thing was the hardest to stare at for awhile to make it cute because it scares me. .__.

Dwaaaah, it’s adorable! :3 You did a fine job kawaii-ing it up. Look at it sparkle! When I first saw the film, the dog scene convinced me that I was in for a fun ride, hehee…
Thanks!

Using the term “oldschool” to describe the previous update was pretty off — that was actually the newest of attempts to bring Merry Melony pt. 2 to fruition. Here is some truly oldschool stuff, starting with the very first concept art for MM ever - done in December of 2004, nearly 8 years ago.. Featuring super wonky proportions and uber awkwardness. It did however set the tone, character design and color. I remember thinking, man, I can do so much better than that. Following that image are screencaps from the short which came just a month and a half later. I think I had just started my sophomore year in college. Coming next — more failed attempts at MM 2.

Gorgeous art, mhm!

Omigaaaawwwwwd… I need to create some kind of mini photo studio because the kitchen light blows and any lamps I use just ruin the shot.

Pff, anyway

The mini rice lump brigade. There are others that I had planned (shrimp, maki, eel), but I have to send back one of the threads I had purchased online because the texture is too papery (I was constantly paranoid that I would get a paper cut and quickly had to stop using it—the particular brand is South Maid (“Very soft yet very strong” lolol), if anyone is curious).

These photos are bad at detailing the red one. In real life you’d be able to see that it is ribbed to mimic the splits in the meat. I also finally figured out how to get fat lines on the orange one without it looking too sloppy.

You should see all the discarded ones that I made today and yesterday. I might run out of white thread before I get around to producing salable versions of these guys.

Hopefully next time I post photos I have something better to take pictures with..

Kumar Pallana is known for his roles in Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, and The Darjeeling Limited. He immigrated from India and opened a small coffee shop in Dallas, Texas. Wes Anderson and his writing partner Owen Wilson lived close by, and would often use his store as a quiet place to work on their screenplays. Anderson decided to write him into the script they were working on at the time. That script eventually became Bottle Rocket, and the two have been working together ever since.

Pagoda is the best.

On May 5th, I sent the following…

Me: I can begin on the project immediately. Based on the scope of the work to be done, I need until the 30th to complete everything.

Client: Let me check with my boss to make sure that timeline works for us

On May 22nd, I received the following

Client: Great news! You can have until the 30th!

I get this shit so much at work. The designer sends the website mockup to the client about a month or two before launch and it takes the client until a week before launch to respond/approve the design/make changes to it. So then I end up with a week or less to code and debug the site. :\

I want to draw and get those Anthrocon badges finished today, but man, it’s fucking Memorial Day. A federal holiday. I shouldn’t be working.

So there.

Watched Little Nemo tonight - easily one of the weirdest/best movies from my childhood. There are a lot of interesting wide shots in the movie, as well as almost acid-like color palettes, patterns, etc. Plus, I love the environment design! You can watch it on IMDB and Hulu!

Yes, yes, yes!
